The Inspiration of Fear
Jenny Ernie-Steighner
“To escape fear, you have to go through it, not around.”
It's amazing how fear can inspire us! Before we get into to the juiciness of that statement, I have a confession to make. As a yoga teacher I have a fear of headstand (gasp!). Yes, I know. What?! How can I even dare to call myself a yogi? Because I LOVE yoga & truly believe anyone with a heart for love, laughter, compassion, & present moment joy is a yogi. I even happen to be quite good at teaching headstand. But something happens to me as I slowly turn my world upside down. Namely, I FREAK out! It's a loss of control, of knowing my center of gravity, & requires patient work as I breathe to softly dissolve that little voice in my head that says: "This is going to end up badly. Almost as badly as the final episode of Will & Grace." Or, the worse version: "What's wrong with you? Why are you scared? This proves you're not good enough."
But you know what? Each day I practice headstand, I get to practice leaning into fear. And really that's something we all get to do, whether by choice, or by circumstance. Each time we practice breathing through something terrifying or trying something new, we practice honoring ourselves even amidst the scary moments of life choices, of opening our hearts to new & old loves, of fearing we're not good enough, of birth, death, & trying kale for the first time.
Just as my fear of headstands inspire me to go upside down, I'd love to know what fear inspires you? Is it changing your eating habits to something unfamiliar but healthier? Is it going after that "BIG" dream, whether that's a 5k or loving your body unconditionally? Is it daring to believe each day that you are worthy of a beautiful life filled with laughter, joyful movement, & just enough chocolate to make the journey worth it?
Whatever your current personal journey of fearful inspiration may be, I hope you honor it! Because you deserve to face your fears so that you may know how strong, capable, & transformative you are. We all do! Best of all, if you fall down (or crash back to earth as I do in headstand sometimes!) know that you're not alone. Remember that you are an adventurer surrounded by a world filled with other adventurers just like you, trying each day, step by step, to face our fears & bring a little more bravery into this world. Thank you for being afraid too!
Love,
