Welcome to our blog, The Bench Press.  Get it?!  We know, puns ARE awesome!  Almost as awesome as late night Stephen King movie marathons or, better yet, the made-for-TV movie Ghost Shark.  (If you haven't seen it, contact us & we'll set up a movie night. Let's just say it will change your life!)

This blog is dedicated to training holistically, eating happily & living vibrantly.  As holistic personal trainers & yoga teachers, we are passionate about sharing how we eat, workout, & get our zen on.  We have learned quite a few fun, effective tips from our years as trainers with a variety of wonderful clients & want to share all that we've learned & continue to learn with you.  Our philosophy is simple: we believe in gastric delights that come from whole foods rather than processed packages (except for gummi bears, Ryan LOVES gummi bears), yoga that is about much more than flexibility & smart training that starts with safe alignment & ends with great results.  If you love weighlifting, endurance sports, yoga & meditation, or healthy eating, welcome home!  If you're not so sure yet, hop right in & have fun reading around!  We're glad you're here either way!

Summer Solstice Smoothie

Happy Summer Solstice!  After surviving the darkness & cold of winter we all deserve to bask in the sunny glow of June 21st & celebrate the longest day of the year.  If you also adore the sweet warmth of the summer, Ryan & I dedicate this smoothie to you.  May it rock your light-filled world!  With a simple combination of yummy, organic coconut milk & cooling honeydew, this summer beverage totally gets your tastebuds smiling!

Best of all, the drink is super simple to make & boasts numerous mind & heart-healthy nutrients.  Honeydew is loaded with potassium, vitamins A, C, & B6, copper & fiber.  Coconut is a wonderful source of Vitamins E, B3, B5, & B6 as well as calcium for bone health, magnesium for healthy blood pressure & heart rythm, & iron for brain, muscle, & cardiopulmonary wellbeing.  Though coconut is a bit higher in the fats department, we highly suggest trying out LIGHT, ORGANIC coconut milk.  With reduced-fat coconut milk you get less of the saturated fat (only 3 grams per serving compared to 9!) while still enjoying the health benefits of coconut's MCFA's (a fancy word referring to fatty acids that are GREAT for the body, protecting it from infections & viruses). 

BONUS: One of our favorite things about refreshing smoothies is that they are a wonderful substitute for surgary drinks that many of our clients, as well as ourselves, get tempted to drink on warm nights.  In place of traditional summer favorites such as beer, cocktails, lemonade, or soda that spike blood sugar, maintain belly fat, & leave you dehydrated, try drinking one of these babies & we promise you won't be sorry!  Plus your tummy will thank you.  This drink is all-people friendly, gentle for any tummy troubles as well as vegan & gluten-free. 

SUMMER SOLSTICE SMOOTHIE RECIPE

Ingredients:

  • 1 Medium Honeydew Melon, Cubed
  • 1/2 Cup Unsweetened, Light Organic Coconut Milk*
  • 1/2 Cup Water OR Crushed Ice
  • A Few Mint Leaves to Garnish

Method:

  • Place ingredients in blender, blend until smooth OR slightly thicker if using crushed ice.  
  • For a fun addition, feel free to add a few mint leaves to taste.
  • Grab a friend & enjoy!
